Today’s world revolves around technology, including satellite radio and TV, mobile phones, and remote controls. Constant upgrades and different programs and systems have introduced computer lessons as a valuable resource for people in all walks of life. Adults, including seniors, benefit from step-by-step programs that teach new skills to curious students and offer refresher training to others. Yet, even with the decades of computer use, there are still a number of people over the age of 60 that have yet to experience this modern marvel.

Basic Computer Skills

Keyboard skills and how to create, save, and edit a document are part of what’s offered in a basic word processing class at the library, Senior Centre, or Community Centre. Seniors who find writing to be an effort because of arthritis or rheumatism in their hands and fingers have commented about how much easier it is to compose letters on their computer and save their work until they get back to it.

Internet & Emails

Learning to navigate the Internet is a process that can be learned a piece at a time. Instead of feeling abandoned by friends and family, older people that missed computer lessons in the past find a surprising variety of courses available about specific tasks. Quite a few people enjoy volunteering their time to walk others through the steps of creating and using an email account. It’s a surprise to someone unfamiliar with the speed of email to find out how quickly a family member across the country or world can receive and respond to a message.

Computer Programmes

Learning how to edit and attach photos from a digital camera allows the sender to share what is going on in his or her life. They also learn how to increase the size on pictures they receive provides easier viewing. That helps them share pictures with family and friends on social media sites. Computers make it easy to talk via the keyboard anytime, and create a support network of friends around the world.

Computers in Everyday Life

Financial courses are offered by several banks. Customers can learn to set up and access bank accounts, mortgages, and credit accounts. They have 24/7 information about their finances. Transferring funds and paying bills online keeps clients in better touch with what bills are paid at any given time.

Adult Computer Lessons

The more adults learn about the PC, the better they understand their local and extended community. Computers provide intellectual stimulation. Life is also improved because they can find answers to questions they may hesitate to ask aloud, such as signs of Alzheimer’s and how to start a postage stamp garden. Learning continues because computer lessons open new avenues of skills and interests.
